A Student`s Handbook for Chinese Function Words

Foreign learners of the Chinese language always find that function words--such as prepositions, auxiliaries, conjunctions, and articles--are difficult to master. A STUDENT`S HANDBOOK FOR CHINESE FUNCTION WORDS is designed to make the learning of Chinese function words easier. It contains more than five hundred regularly used function words, coupled here with straightforward explanations and detailed descriptions of usage. To facilitate students` learning, sample sentences in Chinese, English, and pinyin are constructed with the most commonly used 2, 905 characters, many of which appear in elementary- and intermediate-level Chinese textbooks. All entries are listed in alphabetical order of pinyin. Each entry includes: the word in Chinese character(s), with the traditional form of a character, if it exists, also included; the pinyin for the word; the part(s) of speech (e.g., adverb, preposition, conjunction, auxiliary) in English; an English explanation of the word`s meaning; an English explanation of how to use the word when it has more than one function in the language; sample sentences in Chinese characters (both simplified and traditional); sample sentences in pinyin; and an English explanation of the sample sentences. Three indexes--the pinyin index, the stroke index in simplified Chinese, and the stroke index in traditional Chinese--are included for readers` easy reference.
